To kick off the giveaway, I had the opportunity to chat with the owner of Sweet{Jolie}, Nicole. We talked about family, her passion for design and fashion, and what inspired her to start Sweet{Jolie}! Let’s meet Nicole!
Thank you so much for taking the time out of your busy schedule to chat with us today! First off, can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your brands?
The pleasure is ALL mine!! I am a stay-at-home mom of 3 children aged 2,3, and 4, as well as the owner of both Sweet {Jolie} and Sweet {Jolie} Vintage.
You are quite the entrepreneur! Can you share a bit about Sweet{Jolie} and how you got started?
Sweet {Jolie} began 3 years ago this June after I had my 2nd daughter (whose name is Kate Jolie). It was born out of a desire for me to be kind to myself after having children, as well as to have something that I did for myself, and to empower other women. We are so hard on ourselves and each other, and I wanted women to know that no matter what stage of life that they’re in, that they deserved to take time for themselves. Putting on a piece of jewelry, an infinity scarf, or carrying around a beautiful handbag only takes a second but it can be so good for one’s self-esteem and self-image!!
You’re also a mother and wife. Tell us about your family and how you typically spend your time when you’re not focusing on your business!
I have been married to my wonderful husband for almost 8 years and we have 3 beautiful children: Amy Margaret (4), Kate Jolie (3) and Henry Lewis (2). We play a LOT and craft a LOT!!!
Business woman, artist, wife, mom…how do you juggle it all?
There are some days that are longer than others, and I’m really trying to learn the meaning of the word “balance” but it seems to work! My hubby is EXTREMELY supportive of me and my businesses and carves out time for me to be able to focus on them. I get a LOT done during naptimes and I’m a very organized person so I typically know everything that’s going to be featured online during each week as far as sales, posts, products and promos go.
It’s obvious that you have a love of fashion and all things vintage. What inspires you?
I love the story behind pieces. I love the history and the quality of vintage pieces. I don’t like having the same things as anyone else and I want my home to reflect my love of all this eclectic, vintage and industrial.
When you sit down to design, whether it’s in fashion or home decor, where do you start? What’s your creative process? Is there a particular space you work in? Do you jam out to music?
I know that most people work best with music, but I prefer silence!! My everyday life is SO hectic that I thrive in the quiet moments!! I do have an office in my home, but I find that I work best at my kitchen island. There’s a ton of natural light that comes in and I find it peaceful.
Do you have a particular piece you’ve created that’s been your favorite?
I don’t have one piece that I prefer over others, but I have been a part of some pieces that I will cherish forever. I’ve been asked to make custom pieces for weddings, as well as to commemorate loved ones. I am always humbled and honoured when someone thinks to ask me to create something for such an important time in their lives.
Sometimes I have those days when I get into a creative rut. Does this ever happen to you and how do you dig yourself out?
It does!! It doesn’t happen very often, but when it does, I do something to pull myself away from what I’m doing. I go shopping, go for a coffee, take a walk. I try to remind myself that my business’ entire premise was to remind myself to be kind to myself, and some days will ALWAYS be more productive than others!!
What’s next for you? Are there any new endeavors on the horizon that we should keep our eyes out for?
I have a new product that I’ll be launching through Sweet {Jolie} that I am beyond excited about!! It’s a huge opportunity for me, and it’s a product that I’ve used and have believed in for over 8 years!! I should be able to launch everything within the next week!
If you could give one piece of advice to the novice DIYer, what would it be?
Be kind to yourself and believe it yourself!! I remember someone telling me once that you don’t see that full potential of what your small business could be until after the first 2 years. That rang so true for Sweet {Jolie}!! I have been so blessed that the company has grown as much as it has over the past 3 years and I am crazy excited to see where it will continue to go!!
