My Next Project: Guest Room Makeover

One of the most wonderful things about moving out of our 1 bedroom apartment and into out 3 bedroom home is the extra available space to house and entertain our guests. With our families spending way too much time on an air mattress already, it’s only natural that our next project is creating a guest retreat.

Here’s how the space looked when we first moved in:

Not exactly guest retreat I had in mind. The room was actually a little girl’s room, hence the painted tree on the wall. If you look closely, you may even be able to see the leftover tack I couldn’t get down from the glow in the dark stars on the ceiling.

When I first started imagining how I wanted my guests to feel when in the room, the obvious thoughts of relaxation and hospitality entered my mind. I was immediately inspired by country cottages, bed and breakfasts, and vintage charm. Below are a few images of my inspiration:

Transforming this space is going to be so much fun!  I‘ve already painted and have even stumbled upon a few great thrift finds which I can’t wait to implement in the room. Don’t be surprised if you catch me taking a quick nap in there when this transformation is complete!

Stay tuned to follow my progress!!

Be sure to check out our newly updated house tour to see a few of the rooms we’ve already begun to transform.

And the award goes to…ME!!

That’s right! I’ve been nominated for another Liebster award!! I’m so honored! Thank you Kristi from Making it in the Mountains!!! If you haven’t checked her out yet, make sure you pay her blog a visit!

The Liebster Award provides a fun and easy way to get to know other new bloggers (you must have under 200 followers).  You then must also nominate 10 other blogs. This is such a great way to get to know your fellow bloggers! Love it!

liebster2

The Liebster Award Rules:

  1. You must link back to the person who nominated you.

  2. You must answer the 10 Liebster questions given to you by the nominee before you.

  3. You must pick 10 bloggers to be nominated for the award with under 200 followers.

  4. You must come up with 10 questions for your nominees to answer.

  5. You must go to their blogs and notify your nominees.

Here are the questions I was asked:

1. How long have you been blogging?

I’ve been blogging since July 2013. It started off pretty sporadic but I’d say I finally found my groove around October/November 2013.

2. What made you decide to start blogging?

My friends always teased me about my “Tanisha” touch. From my themed parties to my room makeovers, I was constantly getting compliments on my style and design personality. While flattered, I tended to shrug it off until eventually I realized that maybe I could share my voice and tips to inspire others. The timing was also perfect as I was a new wife and excited to embark on a new adventure!

3.  What is your favorite thing to write about?

Home makeovers. Hands Down! I love showing how easy and affordable it can be to completely transform a space your dream room. If I can do it, you can do it.

4. Do you have a day job in addition to blogging?

Yup! When I’m not tearing out fixtures or covered in paint, I actually go to my Corporate America, 9-5 job in Consumer Insights. I love my day job and enjoy being able to express my creative side through my blog!

5. If you could pick any other city to live in, where would it be?

Realistically, Boston. I lived there for a year and half right after college and I loved it. Dream world answer- somewhere in the south of France or Tuscany. I enjoy anything European and anything with wine!

6. What’s your favorite blog?

Oh I have so many I couldn’t possibly single one out! Dear Lillie, Young House Love, View Along the Way, The Turquoise Home, the list goes on and on…

7.  Does anyone in your personal life know that you blog?

Yes! Many people do. I don’t often around promoting it to them as much as a probably should, but if they ask, I’ll share it. My mom is more of a promoter of my blog than I am. She has all of her girlfriends following along!

8.  Where do you see your blog in one year?

I am learning something new about blogging every day. I hope that my learnings continue to help me grow and able to reach and inspire more and more DIYers out there!

9.  Three favorite online shopping websites.

Joss and Main– Tons of inspiring and unique pieces!

Etsy– I love to support other artists and crafters. This site is so fun to browse!

Amazon- Because they have everything!

10.  From who, what or where does your blogging inspiration come?

My blogging inspiration comes from my family, friends, and life’s most precious moments. What a great way to document your life and have a story to look back on years later!

11. What is the best thing about you?

I’m always changing, evolving, growing, and exploring. Sometimes this is intentional, other times it’s not, but it’s always interesting. I believe that there are too many adventures waiting for you in life to just stay still.

Ok, so know that you know more about me, here’s what I want to know about you:

1. How long have you been blogging?

2. What or who serves as your blogging inspiration?

3. If you’re not in front of your computer writing a post, what could your fans find you doing to enjoy your free time?

4. Has there ever been a project or idea that didn’t go as you planned? AKA, any DIY disasters?

6. Where do you see your blog in 1 year?

5. If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?

7. If you could have anyone play you in a movie, who would it be and why?

8. What’s your favorite home purchase/project you ever made?

9. Any travel plans this year?

10. What advice would you give to any other new bloggers out there?

And the blogs I nominate are:

Home Sweet Life

Something Decorated

Life With A Dash of DIY Design

Eat Drink and DIY

Lovely Neighbors

Flirting with DIY

Modernly Homemade

An Awfully Big Adventure

Cents and Cents-abilities

Spring Cleaning Challenge 2014: Week 1 Declutter

Spring Cleaning Challenge week 1

Ok lovelies! Spring is officially in full swing and so is our Spring Cleaning Challenge 2014!!! This is the first of a 5 week series where we will tackle those dreaded spring cleaning tasks together! We’re leaving no man (or woman) behind! So let’s get started!

Week 1: Declutter

What? Did you really expect me to start the challenge off with how to make your bathroom tiles shine? Hold your horses! Before we can truly deep clean our homes, it is essential to declutter and get rid of any unwanted/unused stuff.

This is probably the most rewarding (as well as the most challenging) step in spring cleaning. Imagine how refreshing it will be at the end of the week to be able to open closet or drawer without fear of its contents falling on your head. However, many find the decluttering process to be overwhelming due to a loss of where to begin!

To help keep you focused, I’ve come up with 5 of the most common areas of clutter which probably need your attention.

1. Closets

  • Go through your clothes and coat closets.
  • Store away winter gear and donate anything you don’t wear.
  • Once you think you’re left with your keepers, TRY THEM ON!! As much as we hate to admit, there are probably a few items that just don’t work anymore. Either they don’t fit, or just simply aren’t as flattering as you remembered.Editing your closet definitely takes discipline but keep at it!

2. Cabinets and Drawers

How many times have we all found a pen and simply put it in a drawer rather than in its designated place?

  • Having a place for “junk” is natural, but it’s a good idea to go through and occasionally familiarize yourself with what you’re actually storing.
  • There’s probably a better spot for many of the items you’ll find so put it there!

3. Refrigerator/Freezer

Discarding leftovers or unused fresh meat and produce is something we all probably do weekly. But what tends to get neglected are condiments and the freezer.

  • Make sure that your mustards, soy sauce, and any other door shelved items are fresh.
  • Check for freezer burns on meat and take an inventory of what’s in your ice box. I guarantee you that you probably could eat defrosted chicken for a week 🙂

4. Pantry

Similar to your refrigerator, your pantry tends to collect items throughout the year.

  • While checking expiration dates, look for duplicates of products. If you’re like me, you probably picked up another can of corn because you couldn’t find the can you were storing for weeks.
  • Make a list of remaining pantry contents. That way, you’ll know you don’t need to pick up these items on your next shopping trip.
  • Once you’ve gone through everything, organize your panty in sections of like items- grains in one basket, soups in another.

5. Office

It’s amazing how quickly junk mail and documents can pile up. Now’s the time to purge anything you don’t need to keep.

  • Separate all documents or letters into 3 separate piles: file, shred, or trash.
  • Be sure that you examine all materials before discarding them to ensure that they do not contain any personal or financial information.
  • Create a “coupon” folder for any valid offerings (unexpired of course) that you’d like to take advantage of. Trash the rest.

How are you feeling? Deep breathes everyone, take it one day at a time. Here’s a few tips additional tips for getting through the week:

  • Take breaks. You’ll be more productive when you’re well rested
  • Work one area at a time. By working in sections, you can see progress more quickly than if you were all over the place. Stay focused!
  • Empty out the space first-.Take everything out and only put back what you’re keeping.  This might sound messy, but it’s really the best way to make sure you evaluate every item. It also allows you to re-organize at the same time!
  • Use the 6 month rule. Don’t use it? Lose it! With seasonal items being the exception, if you haven’t used it in 6 months, it is probably time to get rid of it.
  • Get it out of the house! Once you’ve determined something as trash or a donation, get rid of it! If you get it out the house immediately, you won’t be tempted to hang on to it.

Well, I’m off to start in my kitchen cabinets. A few of my cabinets serve as my “catch-all” space and could definitely use some organization!

Share your progress with me! Comment below on which projects you’re tackling and send me space photos at info@myknottedlife.com. You could be featured in a future post!

Good luck everyone!!
